Taita Taveta, KENYA: A mother and her one year old child have been detained in a hospital in Voi over sh.85,000 bill.

Agneta Wakio and her baby, Clara Wawasi, have been forced to stay at Tsavo Comprehensive medical annex in Voi for more than four weeks now after failing to pay the child’s medical bill.

According to Agneta, the baby was first admitted at Wesu hospital before being referred to Moi hospital for further treatment.

She was forced to move the child from Moi hospital to Tsavo Comprehensive medical annex due to the nurses’ strike.

The bills accumulated to sh.105,000, but her husband only managed to get sh.20,000 from friends contributions.

A doctor from Tsavo Comprehensive Medical Annex, identified as Dr. Ismail, confirmed the incident saying the hospital received many patients during the nurses strike period one of them being Clara Wawasi.

“We treated her but the parents couldn’t pay the hospital bill for the baby and mother to be discharged,” said the doctor.

“We have been receiving such patients who seek treatment but fail to clear their hospital bill due to lack of NHIF cover which could help in payment,” added the doctor.
