Lamu, KENYA: A man in Lamu town has been arrested after he surrendered to his in-laws and confessed to killing his wife.

Police are holding Samuel Muhuri,33 who is believed to have killed his wife following a domestic dispute on Wednesday evening after which he locked the lifeless body in their house and fled.

The remains the woman are believed to have been hidden for three days inside their house at Gadeni area in Lamu town.

The body of Janet Wambua Nyaga 34, was however recovered by police following a tip-off from members of the public and friends of the deceased who became suspicious of her sudden disappearance.

Police confirmed that the woman had been strangled using a mosquito net wire that was still tightly tied around her neck when she was found.

Neighbors had also complained of a foul smell which was coming from the locked house and reported the matter to the police.

A neighbor of the couple, Zablon Wanje said the couple are notorious for their numerous domestic squabbles and endless fights.

He, however, said they were shocked that the man would go to the extent of murdering his wife considering they had just held a party at their home a day before the murder.

“We are used to them fighting and quarreling all the time but we didn’t really think it would get to this point. We are shocked he would kill his wife. They just held a party at their house on Tuesday and they were all very jovial”said Wanje.

Confirming the incident, Lamu West OCPD Juma Londo said the man was arrested shortly after he surrendered to his in-laws in Mpeketoni and confessed what he had done on Friday morning, three days after he committed the murder.

The in-laws turned him in to the police.

“Police had to break into the house since it was locked with a padlock from outside.Neighbours had reported a foul smell coming from the house while friends had reported that had just disappeared and couldn’t be reached on phone, which was suspicious. They recovered her body which was just lying on her living room floor. It was badly decomposed,” said Londo.

The man is currently being held at the Mpeketoni police station and will be arraigned in court anytime to answer to the murder charges.

The deceased’s body has been taken to the Mpeketoni hospital mortuary.

She leaves behind a young baby.

Londo besieged couples to embrace healthier dispute resolution mechanisms instead of violence or suicide.

A month ago, a middle aged man commited suicide at Matanya village in Mpeketoni after he found out his wife was cheating on him.

The body of Phillip Ngugi,30, a father of two was found dangling on a tree, just metres away from his house.
