Mombasa,KENYA:At least three people were injured Thursday after two rival gangs clashed  in Consolata area of  Likoni ,Mombasa county.

According to police officers, the clash occurred between the members of Wakali kwanza gang and Wajuku wa bibi over the killings of one of their members said to have been poisoned. The deceased is said to have died on Wednesday at Coast general hospital where he was receiving treatment.

The fight began at the Consolata playing ground as the rival group of Wajuku wa bibi  was returning to the area after burying  their deceased  member in Pungu area.

According to police sources, the suspects totaling  100, wearing  Jubilee t-shirts and armed with machetes and knives started attacking anyone they found on their way and looting from nearby shops as they chanted hymns to revenge the killings of their member.

A businessman at Consolata area who spoke to Baraka fm on condition of anonymity said the suspects took away five new plastic chairs as they ran away. Another businessman,  a butcher in the area  said the gang stole about ten kg of meat from his  butchery.

“A woman who  is regular customer in my butchery sustained  injuries after she was slashed by the gangs as she was waiting  outside after being served , “said the butcher.

A businesswoman who identified as Mama Jane who operates a  grocery business a few metres  from the butchery said the gang members ordered her to give them the proceeds of the day or else they would slash her with a machete.

“I gave them Sh 4000 cash which I had collected for the day. They ran  away as they chanted tutawamaliza, tutalipiza,”said the woman amid tears.

Likoni deputy police Chief Anthony Shimoli said the Kenya Navy officers arrived at the scene but the suspects had  already disappeared.

He  blamed the local security officials over their non cooperation with police officers to  identify the criminal gangs.

“We have summoned the assistant chiefs and village elders to appear before the officer commanding station so that they can be questioned because this criminal gang are known to everybody, they are not new in this area,”said police boss.

He also   disputed claims that some people were injured the attack saying there was no formal report lodged at the police desk.
