Mombasa, KENYA: A business man was on Tuesday shot and seriously injured along Moi Avenue, Mombasa in an early morning robbery incident.

Two suspected robbers also escaped with sh.1 million from the businessman outside Commercial Bank of Africa along Moi avenue road, in the 10 am incident.

According to police, the suspected robbers left a black bag containing 19 rounds of ammunition at the scene, which was used to carry the firearm.

The business man identified as Baron Kilago, a Kenya Ferry Services captain, was carrying the money to the bank for deposit.

He had just alighted from a Tuk-tuk and as he was negotiating with the security personnel to access the entrance, two men in a motorcycle accosted him, shooting him on the leg and hand, police said.

Urban DCI Jacob Kanake told Baraka FM that one of the suspect was armed with an AK47 riffle.

The businessman who is recuperating at Aga Khan hospital is said to be a regular customer at the said bank.

“He is at theater now, but he is in stable condition. We have mobilized officers from all sections and we are following crucial leads,” said the DCI boss.

He added that the  money was meant to be deposited in the bank for exchange into float, as the man runs a number of M-pesa outlets.

He said police are also looking for a Tuktuk operator for questioning over the incident; as he might have colluded with the robbers.

The suspects later escaped with the motorcycle to an unknown place.
