Joho leads in new survey for the Mombasa Gubernatorial race

Mombasa, KENYA: Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho could have defended his seat if elections were held today, this is according to a new survey released on Tuesday.

According to a survey conducted by Trends and Insights For Africa TIFA, the ODM deputy party leader is the preferred candidate among those eyeing the Mombasa gubernatorial seat.

The study rates Joho at 68 % while his closest rival Suleiman Shahbal of Jubilee is far behind on 15% ahead of Mombasa Senator Hassan Sarai Omar who has 7%.

Nyali Member of Parliament Hezron Awiti who is also in the race to unseat Joho in the August 8 polls followed on paltry 3%.

The research also ranked the incumbent as the most popular politician in Mombasa with 68% followed by Tourism CS Najib Balala and governor hopeful Suleiman Shahbal each with 9% .

According to the survey, 66% of Mombasa residents are opposition’s NASA supporters, 23 % are Jubilee allies while 10 % are yet to decide on which affiliation to support.

The study released on Tuesday, was carried out between March 16 and 18, and involved 550 respondents aged 18 and above.
