Lamu, KENYA: A General Service Unit-GSU officer who allegedly shot his colleague following a brawl in Lamu has been charged with attempted murder at the Lamu law courts.

The Recce squad officer Bethwel Kiplagat allegedly shot his fellow officer Anthony Wanjohi in the stomach, after they had an altercation at the Boni forest where they were all based being part of the ongoing Linda Boni security operation.

Kiplagat who is attached to the Milimani GSU Recce camp in Lamu East, is said to have unlawfully attempted to cause the death of PC Anthony Wanjohi by shooting him with a gun.

The officer is said to have lost his cool and turned on his colleague on January 10 at Boni forest.

The officer was however wrestled down by fellow officers and disarmed of the G-3 riffle he used to shoot Wanjohi with.

He denied the charges and is currently being remanded at the Lamu police station, as he awaits the pre-bail judgment on Tuesday next week.

Hearing of the case has been set for 6th and 7th March this year.

The case is the most recent of officers in Lamu turning on each other after that of Sergeant David Gitonga who was shot dead by colleagues, in what is believed to be a case of mistaken identity at Basuba GSU camp in Lamu East four months ago.
