Fishing activities at the Old Ferries port in Kilifi County were temporarily suspended after a fisherman drowned while going about his duties.
The fisherman was rescued by his colleagues and rushed to Mephi hospital where he was pronounced dead.
According to Kilifi Fishermen Group Chairman Henry Chiko, the fisherman had run out of gas in the oxygen tank while deep diving.
“I think he dived somewhere very deep and while his oxygen tank ran out of gas, he tried coming up but he couldn’t manage”, he said.
Chiko has urged both the County and National governments to build for them a gas filling station to avert such deaths.
The body of the deceased was transferred to Kilifi County Referral Hospital mortuary.
