A considerable number of early primary school children lack access to books and reading materials which affects their studies.
In Mombasa County, several individuals and non-profit organizations have made it their business to ensure children get access to the educational materials they need.
Meet Briyan Musumba who is using his passion for mountaineering to ensure Mombasa children have books and other educational materials.
“I am a Kenyan educator, currently working in Coastal Kenya in the counties of Kilifi and Kwale to improve learning using an innovative methodology, Learning through Play with Technology,” said Briyan Musumba.
He started the ‘Climbing for Children and Education‘ campaign, to bring together a community of fellow climbers and other well-wishers to ensure children get access to the educational materials they need.
“I am embarking on a new journey combining my two passions, education and hiking. Through my climbs I want to raise awareness and resources to help equip schools in coastal Kenya with more books to improve reading and writing for children in Grades 1 to 3,” said Musumba.
Since beginning the journey in 2023, Musumba has climbed 15 mountains including Mt. Kenya and Mt. Kilimanjaro.
“I am passionate about education and enabling children to achieve their full potential. In my free time, I love to hike! Hiking challenges me to want to learn more about my strengths and gives me opportunities to make new friends and cultures,” he said.
In September, Musumba delivered books for the ‘Climbing for Children and Education’ at St. Augustine and Mvita Primary schools.
Earlier in August, he delivered 174 books to Bangladesh Youth Space under the Pwani Youth Network.
Through mountaineering, he has raised sh.60,319 out of a sh.100,000 target on M-Changa, $450 (sh. 58,059) via Amazon Gift Card, and $50 (sh. 6,451) via PayPal.
He has so far conquered Mt. Longonot, Mt.Kenya, Mt. Kilimanjaro, Mt Satima, Mt. Kinangop, Elephant Hill, Rurimeria, Ngong Hills, Kihanura, Table Mountain, Kipipiri, and 12 Apostles.
