Two dead, 7 injured after building collapses in Embakasi, Nairobi

Nairobi, KENYA: Two people have been confirmed dead and seven injured, one among them is in critical condition after a one-story building collapsed in Embakasi area, Nairobi.

According to the Deputy Director and Communication Officer of National Disaster Management Unit (NDMU Pius Maasai, the incident happened today at about 11.50 AM when a Temporary Structure was being demolished by persons believed to have been hired by the owner.

Emergency rescuers including the National Police Service, Nairobi County Fire, The Kenya Red Cross Society, St. John Ambulance, The KDF Disaster Response Unit (DRU) among others responded immediately and removed all trapped victims

According to the County Executive Committee Member for Lands, Peter Wachira, the structure did not have approvals and the County Government has launched investigations.

“It is unfortunate that we continue to lose lives due to the negligence of some individuals who fail to follow the laid down procedures for constructing buildings. After the investigations are concluded those found culpable will be charged,” he said.

The owner of the building is still at large.
