Riyadha mosque in Lamu declared a national monument

Mombasa,KENYA:The cabinet secretary for sports and national heritage Rashid Echesa has declared the Riyadha Mosque in Lamu as a national monument.

This is according to the latest gazette notice issued on Friday.

The mosque lies on a 1.31 hectare piece of land located in Langoni area of Lamu town
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 25 (1) (b) of the National Museums and Heritage Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Sports and Heritage declares the open space specified in the Schedule, which he considers to be of historical interest, to be a National Monument within the meaning of the Act.” Reads the gazette notice.

The gazette notice has also given complainants objecting to the declaration of the mosque into a national monument within 60 days.

The mosque whose construction dates back to 1892 has been hailed as a landmark historical site over its role in the propagation of Islam in the religion.

Previously the mosque was a temporally wooden structure that was being used by madrassa students.

Every year, the mosque hosts more that 10,000 pilgrims during the annual Maulid festival.
