4 dead and 13 injured during a stampede caused by spilled tea at Kericho Green Stadium

Four people were reported dead in Kericho County following a stampede at Kericho Green Stadium.

“Ref OB 09/20/10/2023 at 0650 hrs. It was reported by Police Officers who were on duty at Kericho Green Stadium today 20/10/2023 at 0300 hours where Mashujaa Celebration is to take place, that there was a stampede caused by a lady who was selling tea outside the stadium accidentally spilled hot tea in the fire near gate “C” along the public road, as a result, members of public panicked and mistook it to be teargas thrown to them,” read the incident report.

In the Friday dawn event, four women died while 13 other people suffered injuries.

“Several people who wanted to gain entry to the stadium were injured and rushed to Kericho County Referral Hospital on board station motor vehicle and county government ambulances,” read the report.

The following were injured:

1. NO. 107525 Cpl Erick Munene of PEU sustained a fracture on the right leg

2. NO. 237315 C.I Mercy Ngaira Mboone of GSU sustained a cut wound on the right eye

3. NO. 218797 of NYS got injured on the head

4. Cynthia Chebet aged 21 years sustained injuries on her back

5. Judy Chepngeno Rotich aged 38 years sustained injuries on both legs and back

6. Andrew Cheruiyot Ngeno aged 42 yrs sustained injuries on the right leg and chest

7. Cynthia Chepkurui aged 27 yrs sustained injuries on the shoulder, back and left leg

8.Cyrus Kebingo aged 67 yrs Community health worker sustained injuries on the neck

9. Selina Kirui aged 56 yrs community health volunteer sustained injuries on the back and left leg. The following had soft tissue injuries

10. Kippkorir Ngetich

11.Rajab Chumo Milgo aged 66 yrs

12. Aoron Kipmurui Rotich aged 17 yrs

13. Cynthia Chebet Langat aged 21 years.

“They are all in stable and receiving treatment at Kericho County Referral Hospital. The dead bodies have been taken to the morgue pending identification and post-mortem,” read the report.
