Malindi and Watamu have been termed as hotspots for police harassment in the coast region.
In a media briefing in Nairobi, Pubs, entertainment, Restaurant Association of Kenya Nairobi chair Frank Mbogo said that the two towns have xperienced police harassment from police since curfew orders were issued by President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2020.
Mbogo said that other areas affected include, Karen, Westlands Lang’ata, and Kariobangi in Nairobi, Bahati in Nakuru, Kiambu, and Kisumu.
He lamented on the continued harassment of their members by the police accusing them of looting their products and running extortion schemes.
“The new protocols are meant to guide the hospitality sector operations as we work towards the resumption . Unfortunately; we have had alarming police harassment of bars, restaurants, and other establishments over the past three weeks.”Mbogo said
The association pointed out that’s such vices and police harassment continues despite Tourism CS Najib Balala Okayed the closure of restaurants at 9 Pm. Previously bars and restaurants closed at 7 pm.
Bar, hotel, and liquor traders association chair Boniface Gachoka urged the government to fully open the economy.
Gachoka pointed out that there is confusion among traders following conflicting orders by the judiciary and president Uhuru Kenyatta over COVID-19 containment measures.
“We have seen this already in the Matatu sector, and the enforcement is ongoing. Most business people operate the same way.”Gachoka said
