President Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday lifted a ban on movement instituted on the counties of Mombasa, Nairobi, and Mandera that has been in place since mid-April.
This follows the expiry of the ban which was renewed for another 30 days on 6th June.
In his state of the nation address on Monday, the president said that long-distance travel in and out of the three counties would be allowed only after the PSV operators fulfill all the requirements set by the Ministries of health and transport.
“ Today I order and direct movement into and out of the Nairobi metropolitan area, Mombasa county and Mandera county shall lapse today or at 4.00 am on Tuesday,” President Uhuru Kenyatta said.
The president added that the 9.00 pm to 4.00 am national wide curfew had been extended for another 30 days.
Local airline travel is set to resume on Wednesday while international travel is set to resume in August.
However, the president warned that all the restrictions lifted would be institution back if the number of cases increases.
“This is not just a call to reopen our country but also a call to civic responsibility’ the president said.
The president has also given the go-ahead for reopening of churches and mosques on the condition that only a maximum of 100 people would be allowed and persons under the age of 13 years and those with underlying conditions would not be allowed.
The ministry of education is expected to give an update on the reopening of schools in the next coming days.
Kenya has so far recorded 7,886 cases of the virus with the global infection toll having surpassed 11.5 million.
