The number of confirmed cases of Coronavirus in the country is expected to hit 10,000 by the end of April.
This is according to the ministry of health acting Director-general Dr. Patrick Amoth who gave the figures on Monday based on an estimation mapping conducted by the ministry.
According to Dr. Amoth, the number of confirmed cases is expected to rise to 1000 by the first week of April, 5000 by the second week of April and 10,000 by the end of April.
The mapping has been conducted to assist the ministry estimate the number of resources and medical personnel they are to dedicate to help fight the virus that has now been declared a global pandemic.
However, Dr. Amoth warned that the rate at which infections multiply does not follow any specific formulae.
“One thing that could work to advantage is that our population is the youthful meaning they could catch the virus and pass it off as a mild illness,” Dr. Amoth said.
Dr. Amoth added that the weak health system in Kenya and the high rate of communicable diseases could work to the disadvantage of the country
This comes just as the country recorded eight more cases of Coronavirus bringing to 50 the number of confirmed cases in Kenya.
The 50 cases are in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kitui, Kajiado and Kwale counties with Nairobi leading followed by Kilifi, Mombasa, Kwale, Kajiado and Kitui counties.
Globally 738,856 cases of the virus have been confirmed with the USA leading at 142,793 cases followed closely by Italy at 97,689 cases.
However, the highest number of deaths have been recorded in Italy and Spain respectively at 10,779 and 7,340 cases respectively.
In Africa South Africa is leading in the number of cases at 1280 cases followed by Egypt at 609 cases.
