The Central Organization for Trade Unions COTU, now wants the Salary and remunerations Commission (SRC) to be disbanded for failure to ensure transparency and fairness when addressing various salary issues in public bodies.

While addressing the steering committee on the implementation of the building bridges Initiative (BBI), Deputy secretary-general for COTU Benson Okwaro, said that the commission has failed on its role to harmonize remuneration and benefits of state officers by becoming a stumbling block to fair labor practices such as independent negotiations between employees and trade unions.

” Despite being an independent constitutional body, the commission has become government lapdog hence interfering with its constitutional mandate, ” Said Okwaro.

This is the second time that COTU is calling for the disbandment of the body it accuses of constantly interfering with the collective bargaining agreements of workers.

“SRC has become the greatest impediment and threat to any negotiations between employers and workers. It should stick to its advisory role and stop interfering with CBAs and other negotiations,” Cotu secretary-general Earnest Nadome said last year.

The union had said it would back the BBI process on condition that the SRC would be dissolved.

The union also wants a Health Service Commission established that shall deal with the posting of health interns, transfer of health workers, welfare and schemes of services for all health workers.
