Only less than 0.3 percent of students who sat their Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations last year have not joined secondary schools.
Speaking at a forum in Nairobi, Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha said that as of 16th February, 2020, the transition was at 99.7 percent.
The CS now says he will be shifting his focus to big companies to sponsor poor students.
“Now that we have reached the 100 percent, I am going to go to the companies that are making money, for example, I shall not let Safaricom off the hook. We are going to follow them until they sponsor some of the children. We are also going to follow some other companies that we also feel must give back to the society,” said CS Magoha.
The Education CS also mentioned that the government was working on bettering infrastructure in the schools.
“We are advertising for the improvement of infrastructure funded by World Bank to the tune of sh.8.2 billion, that is just one source. My job is to ensure that not a shilling of that money goes into anybody’s pocket,” said the Education CS.
CS Magoha also said that they will ensure that part of Constituency Development Fund (CDF) money goes towards schools’ infrastructure.
“CDF is not money belonging to MPs, it is taxpayers’ money and we are going to insist that they apply it to infrastructure,” he added.
