Mombasa, KENYA: Mombasa residents suffering from cancer will soon not have to travel to Nairobi to get their radiotherapy treatment.
Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho on Wednesday said his government, in partnership with the National Government, was at an advanced stage of putting up a radiotherapy center at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital.
“This will ensure that patients suffering from cancer would get their full treatment in Mombasa and not have to travel to Nairobi for radiotherapy,” said Governor Joho.
Joho was speaking during a session with Medical Consultants who work at the Coast General Hospital, where they discussed how to better services at the hospital in order to continue providing quality services and serve more patients in the County and beyond.
The National Cancer Institute, in 2019, tabled a report to the National Assembly’s Health Committee detailing cancer prevalence rates per county and Mombasa was among the 11 counties with high incidences of cancer cases in the country.
In the report, it showed that the most prevalent type of cancer Mombasa women suffered were Breast at 36.8%, Cervix at 30% and Oesophagus at 8% while in most Mombasa men suffered from Prostate, Mouth and Pharynx and Oesophagus at 16.3, 5.6 and 5.4 percent prevalence rate respectively.
