Senate committee raises alarm over grabbed Kilifi prison land

The Senate committee on Justice and Legal Affairs has raised alarm over part of the Kilifi GK prisons land which the senate alleges has been grabbed.

According to the Nandi senator Samson Cherargai , 8 acres of the 91 acres belonging to the prison has been grabbed by unknown individuals.

Cherargai who was speaking during a tour of the coastal region to access the prison facilities urged the Ministry of Lands to look into the matter .

“We know that the issue of unfair distribution of land is a historical injustice but that does not give individual the right to grab prison land,I urge the stakeholders involved to look into the matter” Cheragai said.

However Cherargai said that the Kilifi land grabbing case is not unique adding that land belonging to the Industrial area prison and other areas had fallen prey to landgrabbers.

“You find that prison land is very vulnerable because prison land lacks title deeds” Cheragai added. Mr Cheragai who is the chairperson of the  was in a tour of the coast region together with the committee that saw them visit the Shimo La Tewa prison,Kwale GK prison and the Kilifi GK prison.

This comes less than three years since the former lands CS Jacob Kaimenyi revealed that more than 4500 acres of prison land had been grabbed across the country.

Kaimenyi who was speaking before he began an exercise that saw primary schools across the country receive title deeds for their land said that Kitale prison had lost over 2,000 acres of its land to grabbers.

Mr Cheragai who is the chairperson of the  was in a tour of the coast region together with the committee that saw them visit the Shimo La Tewa prison,Kwale GK prison and the Kilifi GK prison.

The committee promised push to have the sentences of petty offenders commuted to community service.
