Police in Taita Taveta county are investigating an incident where a police officer allegedly shot dead a 36-year-old man in a suspected love triangle.
The incident happened on Friday at 11:35 pm at the Rockland nightclub in Taveta Town.
The suspect who has been identified as corporal David Gitahi was on patrol, when he met Mr. Esau Juma Mwanguku and confronted him for “trying to compete for a government officer in eating from the same pot” according to Citizen TV.
Both the suspect and the victim were said to have been drunk during the confrontation.
According to Francis Chege, a night spot manager who reported the incident to authorities, Corporal Gitahi fired a single bullet into the chest of Mr. Mwanguku, killing him on the spot.
Police say circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unknown, though people familiar with Corporal Gitahi and Mr. Mwanguku claim they were chasing after the same woman, who loved Mr. Mwanguku more than the police officer.
The body of the deceased was taken to the Taveta Sub-County Hospital mortuary.
