The Tana River County government is planning to engage youths in sports activities as a way of reducing young people engaging in drug abuse and joining extremist groups.

Speaking during a meeting at Hola stadium, the CEC for education, culture and sports Mr. Abas Kunyo said that the government is planning to hold a league in the county that encompasses all sports clubs in the county.

The executive said that the league aims at uniting youths across the county from Bangale in Tana North Sub County to Kipini in the Tana Delta sub-county up to the finals when the winning teams would be awarded.

“The league will be launched next week Tuesday here at Hola stadium.  Recently there was a cross country event but we did not participate because the Athletics Kenya committee in the county level did not mobilize adequately sportsmen and women adequately” said the CEC.

This comes amidst an outcry from stakeholders that county sports activities have been looked down upon with the stakeholders accusing the county of favoring certain teams.

Abubakar Omara, one of the players who had participated in a county-level tournament some years back told Baraka FM that stakeholders chickened out on the winners at the last minute.

“We played until the end of the match but when the time came for awarding, the chairman of  FKF went missing and was unreachable on phone. We later heard that the award had been given to a team which did not even make it to the finals. said Omara.
