Ugandans may soon be forced to come to Kenya if they want to bet.
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has banned sports betting and gambling in the country saying that they promote laxity among the youth.
According to a directive given by Ugandan president, no more sports betting and gambling companies will be licensed in the country.
“We have received a directive from President Museveni to stop licensing sports betting, gaming and gambling companies,” said Uganda’s Minister of State Defense, David Bahati.
The directive also states that the licenses of the currently registered betting companies will not be renewed upon expiration.
In Kenya, former Gem MP Jakoyo Midiwo had sponsored the Betting, Lotteries, and Gaming (Amendment) Bill, 2016 seeking to crack down on the gaming industry by introducing stringent measures such as banning advertising for betting firms, capping the maximum wager on sports betting platforms at sh.200 and requiring all funds made from gambling to be deposited into a bank account, among others.
