Mombasa, KENYA: Some passengers who had plans to travel to upcountry from Mombasa have been forced to celebrate their holidays in the coast after they were left stranded at Mwembe Tayari due to hiked fares.

For those heading to Nairobi, early bookings helped.

“I booked yesterday and am just waiting for it to arrive and the prize is not that bad,” said Jane, a passenger travelling to Nairobi.

Some were forced to line up and wait for vehicles.

Those heading to Kaloleni, Voi, Kitui and Taita Taveta on Monday had to sit under the hot sun to wait for fares to at least reduce, and the fact that the vehicles were scarce did not help the situation.

Passengers going to Voi had to pay sh.1000-1500 instead of the normal sh.250-300.

Some chose to go back home rather than pay high fares.
