Mombasa, KENYA: Mombasa hoteliers are faulting the county government for the lack of order in public beaches.
Speaking to Baraka FM Sam Ikwaye on Wednesday, the Kenya Association of Hotelkeepers and Caterers (KAHC) Coast branch executive officer said the county government is letting them down by not coming up with policies that will restore security, order, and discipline among beachgoers.
Ikwaye added that there are no proper infrastructures on the beaches like toilets and people litter anywhere.
“The county has not taken its responsibilities seriously, people drink alcohol on the beach anyhow, people come with their own chairs from home, there are so many illegal businesses going on the beach. There is a bill that has not been passed in the county assembly, a bill that will give proper guidelines to all businesses on the beach and all who will attend public beaches”, said Ikwaye.
Ikwaye cautioned that the lack of proper order and organized way of doing business on the beach could inconvenience even rescuers in case of an emergency.
However, he welcomed the move by the county government through the Department of Trade, Tourism, and Investment, to enforce a routine cleanup exercise of beach fronts by beachfront property owners.
This comes just as Kwale county moves to enforce a night beach ban on underage children.
