Senate moves to tame fighting county assemblies

Nairobi,KENYA: Senate committee on devolution has vowed to summon governors whom their counties are rocked by endless wrangles between speakers and members of the county assemblies.

In a media briefing at parliamentary buildings, the committee chair who is also Laikipia Senator John Kinyua said that his committee and the Senate as a whole is perturbed following the wave of wrangles rocking various counties which have affected the service delivery to Wananchi.

Kinyua said that following the emergence of bad blood between the speakers and members of various county Assemblies, the committee will probe and come up with amicable solutions so as to avert scenarios where the realization of devolution might gridlock.

“The committee has therefore decided to reign on this habit by summoning and interrogating the affected counties with a view of finding a lasting solution,” Kinyua said

“Those who were and are used to the habit should brace to face the Senate. In this regard, the committee will summon respective governors, speakers other Assembly leaders and MCA’s .”He added

He alluded that the major causes of hostilities in county Assemblies include greed to control power, misappropriation of funds, allowances and tenders in the counties.

The  counties most  affected include ,Nyandarua ,Kisumu ,Kakamega ,HomaBay ,Migori ,Nyamira ,Nakuru and Nairobi.

He pointed that counties are at initial stages in the realization of devolution and there is a need for Senate to intervene, urging factions in the said counties to uphold talks to reach a truce.
