North Eastern leaders have hit out at the Teachers Service Commission for rejecting the new proposals by the ministry of education to lower the entry grades for those joining the teaching profession.
Led by Wajir East MP Rashid Amin, the MPs want the programme implemented saying that it will increase the number of teachers in the North Eastern region.
The region has seen a mass exodus of teacher over the past few months due to frequent attacks from the Alshabaab Militia.
“To our dismay, Nancy Macharia the TSC CEO has negated the good spirit of that gazettement saying that she is not going to absorb these teachers who attained D plus in the secondary course.”Amin said
The MPs also noted that they are not expecting this year’s KCSE and KCPE students perform well in the national exams set to start next week, due to the shortage of teachers that has been experienced in the region for the past few months.
Education CS Amina Mohamed had a few weeks ago directed colleges to lower the entry grade for marginalized students willing to join the profession.
The teacher’s service commission, however, rejected the proposal saying that it will affect the quality of teachers.
If the proposal is implemented students seeking to study for diploma in education should have a C plain or a C- in KCSE down from the previous C+.
Meanwhile, those seeking a certificate in education popularly knows as p1, needed a D plus, down from a C plain.
