Kilifi, KENYA: Sabaki ward member of county assembly (MCA) Edward Kazungu Dele and 40 other people have been arrested over the invasion of the 900-acre Agricultural Development Corporation (ADC) land in Kilifi.
Police arrested Dele and his team on Tuesday morning at Kwa Ndomo area in Sabaki, Malindi.
Not even the efforts of Kilifi County Assembly Speaker Jimmy Kahindi, who went to the station with ten other MCAs, to have them released bore fruit.
Police had to disperse a crowd protesting outside Malindi police station over the arrests.
More than 300 squatters, led by Dele, on Sunday invaded the 900-acre land and subdivided it among themselves.
The squatters invaded the land in Kisiwani claiming that their efforts to have the matter resolved by the relevant authorities were fruitless.
“Today marks the end of our tribulations, we are sharing the land since efforts to seek the intervention from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), National Land Commission, the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) has fallen on deaf ears,” Dele told Daily Nation on Sunday.
One of the companies being accused of acquiring part of the 900-acre land illegally was Malindi Water and Sewerage Company (Mawasco).
Claims Mawasco Managing Director Gerald Mwambire dismissed on Monday saying they acquired the land legally.
Mawasco is said to have acquired 25 acres of the land at sh.40 million to construct a housing pension scheme for company staff and county government.
