Wajir Governor Mohamed Abdi Mahamud might lose his appeal at the Supreme Court after Kampala University disowned his degree.
Governor Abdi Mahamud claimed to have graduated from Kampala University in 2012 after Former Governor Ahmed Abdullahi challenged his election citing lack of academic qualification.
Through his lawyer Fred Ngatia, Governor Abdi Mahamud complained that the two courts had ignored his right to prove his academic credibility, in his defense he had tabled evidence proving that he was admitted to the institution in 2009 and later graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business and management studies.
The deputy registrar of Kampala University at the said time, John Onyango Orinda, refuted the Governor’s claims that he graduated with the 2012 lot stating that the governor’s name did not appear in the 196 list of 2012 grandaunts.
John Onyango further argued that it is common knowledge and university practice in Kenya and Uganda that the holder of second class (lower division) degree cannot enroll for a master’s programme without a two-year work experience.
Governor Abdi had claimed that he obtained a master’s degree from the same university and has attached a list of students who graduated with him in 2012.
The court directed Governor Abdi’s lawyer to file affidavits and the respondents, including the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission and Former Wajir governor, to file theirs for an early hearing date to be given.
