Nairobi, KENYA: Parliament was on Wednesday stunned as female members, drawn from all political fronts, walked into the chambers donning white head scarves in protest of the delayed implementation of the two-thirds gender rule.
The incident prompted Majority leader Aden Duale to ask the Speaker to give direction on the matter.
However, the speaker ruled that female lawmakers dress code was in line with standing orders of the legislative house, thus urging them to uphold it following the fact that it did not flout house rules.
He congratulated them and said women’s dress code should be decent and formal.
“There is nothing hidden beneath the headgear. I have no objection to it as it will not affect business in the House,” Muturi said.
Nominated MP Cecily Mbarire said that female MPs were forced to wear head gears after the implementation of 2/3 gender rule flopped .
She insisted that they will be wearing them every Wednesday to parliamentary buildings until their grievances are tackled.
“We come in peace to let this house be and the nation know, that it has been eight years, and we are asking that, that legislation be considered,” Mbarire said.
In protest Kitutu Chache North MP, Jimmy Angwenyi, said that male members should also come with caps so that they can be “in uniform” with their female counterpart.
