On Wednesday, Kenyans commemorated 40 years since the death of the first president of the republic Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.

Kenyatta, father to current head of State President Uhuru Kenyatta, died in his sleep at State House, Mombasa in 1978 at the age of 81 years.

He had earlier suffered a stroke in 1966 and 1968.

The family of the first president led by his son President Uhuru Kenyatta and wife Mama Ngina Kenyatta commemorated the day in a special mass held at Holy Family Basilica in Nairobi.

“I believe today more than anything else is really a day where we have an opportunity to reflect on that past or history and to see in ourselves through the lenses of his life where we are today and where we are going as people and as a nation.” said President Uhuru during the memorial.

Also at the memorial was former Prime Minister and Nasa chief Raila Odinga.

“We should try to recapture the dreams of the founding fathers on our nation and that is the meaning of the hand shake,” said Raila.

Also in attendance was deputy President William Ruto.
