Police warn of possible Alshabaab attacks in Lamu

Lamu,KENYA: The National police service has issued an alert warning that Alshabaab militants may be planning to attack some areas in Boni forest and Lamu.

In a statement issued on Monday, the police said that they had received some credible reports of Alshabaab moving towards the Lacta belt which the Somalia side of the Boni forest while residents reported seeing suspected Alshabaab elements in Kihonge between and Mpeketoni and Witi while others had been reported moving along the Kiunga –Hindi route.

The police said the militants may be planning to carry out attacks against soft targets in Boni forest and Mpeketoni.

Police further said that  Alshabaab have spilled over their activities in parts of Lamu West and lower Tana.

“In this month of June 2018, We have observed spillover of Alshabaab activities notably within Lamu West and lower parts of Tana River county. There have also been increased reports of sightings within the region an indication may have activated their makeshift camps in the vast Boni forest to flush out the militants,” part of the statement reads.

However, police say they have intensified patrols and in those areas.

Late last month, police issued a statement warning that Alshabaab militants may be planning to intensify attacks during the holy month of Ramadhan With Eid expected to be celebrated on 15th.

Last week, a suspected Alshabaab attack claimed the lives of four officers in neighboring Garissa county.
