Mombasa, KENYA: Nine people have been reported dead in the Coast region ever since floods started to wreak havoc in the coastal counties.
Among the nine, seven are from Tana River County which is the most affected county in the coast, and two are from Kilifi County; the second affected county.
Speaking on Tuesday during an interview on Baraka FM’s Chanja Maswala program which is aired every weekday from 8-9pm, Red Cross Coast Regional Manager Hassan Musa, said that in Tana River alone more than 64,000 people have been affected by the floods.
Most of those affected have been displaced together with their livestock.
“That is a bigger number, and it’s not on the people alone, the floods have caused havoc even in their farms, which is approximated to be 70 percent of the whole Tana River county,” said Musa.
Musa said that in Tana River county there are 108 camps for the displaced persons.
He said as Red Cross in partnership with other organizations and county governments of the respective counties, they are doing their best to make sure they provide basic necessities for those in the camps.
“We are currently undertaking several measures including providing them with clean water, foodstuffs and other basic needs. We also have mobile clinics where we are using a boat to move around the camps,” said Musa.
In Kilifi County, there are about 22,000 people affected by the floods, most of them from Magarini and partly Malindi.
There are about seven camps for displaced people in Kilifi, though Mr. Musa said that the flood effects in Kilifi are beginning to decrease.
Taita Taveta County is ranked third among counties affected by the floods in the Coast Region with around 16,000 people affected.
In Mombasa, 900 people mostly from Kadzandani have been affected while in Lamu County, about 2000 people have been displaced.
The Coast Region Red Cross manager appealed for more help to the affected people especial in Tana River County.
The ongoing rains have also caused havoc leading to the Kilifi-Mariakani Water and Sewerage Company (Kimawasco) shutting down its water pumps at the Baricho water works for some time.
Kimawasco Managing Director Hezekiah Mwarua said some of its water pumps at the station based in Langobaya, Malindi Sub-County were submerged in water because of the ongoing heavy rains.
The weatherman has predicted the rains to continue in better part of this month of May.
