Nairobi,KENYA:Lamu County has been listed as the county with the least cases of corruption.
This is according to the latest corruption survey report released by the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission.
According to the report, Lamu is followed by Taita Taveta, Tana River and Kericho counties in the list of least corrupt counties.
Muranga County was listed as leading in corruption related cases followed by Trans Nzoia, Mandera, Kirinyanga and Marsabit.
According to the report, government ministry’s were not speared as the ministry of interior and coordination of National government currently headed by Cs Fred Matiangi was topping the list of the most corrupt government ministy.
The ministry of Health was second on the list followed by devolution and planning as the ministry of Education and that of Transport and infrastructure rounded up the top five most corrupt ones.
This comes just a few weeks after an audit report by the Auditor general Edward Ouko revealed how the interior ministry operated a secret bank account contrary to the law.
Ouko in his findings indicated that the ministry transacted over 8.7 Billion without the authority of the national Treasury as required by the law.
The audit report pointed out that the interior ministry did not maintain a cash book, bank reconciliations and related payment records to support the numerous cash withdrawals and deposits made through the account.
The EACC report also shows that, 30 percent of Kenyans believe corruption has grass roots in the country with 40 percent of Kenyans applying corrupt techniques in order to land a job in the government ministry.
The report indicates that most corruption cases in the counties are reported in public works, education, childcare and medical services areas, and finance and procurement departments.
The commission reported a 10 per cent drop in the level of trust Kenyans have in the government’s commitment to fighting graft.
