Meru University Vice chancellor sent on terminal leave

Nairobi,KENYA:Meru University of Science and Technology Vice-Chancellor Prof. Japhet Magambo has been sent on terminal leave pending expiry of his contract in June this year.

At a media briefing after meeting members of the University Council at a closed-door meeting in Nairobi on Tuesday, Education cabinet Secretary Amb. Amina Muhammed has replaced Magambo with Prof. Charity Gichuku Deputy Vice Chancellor (finance, administration and planning) to take over the running of the institution until a new Vice Chancellor is appointed.

The CS said the university council was working round the clock to address the challenges facing the university after the students protested against surcharging academic fees.

“We are working round the clock to address the challenges facing the university,” Said Amina.

She however, underscored the need for the student leadership to engage in different ways of resolving conflicts without disrupting the academic programs, citing dialogue as a means of solving grievances facing the university instead of mounting demonstrations.

Muhammed directed the acting Vice Chancellor to also engage the community in matters affecting them so that amicable solutions are found before matters is blown out of propotion.

The CS said investigations into the killing of the student leader had already began and had hopes it will be concluded soon.

“The university students who were sent home following the shooting of their leader last Tuesday would be recalled soon so that the university can resume classes.” She said.

On the University lecturers strike over the CBA 2017-2021, the CS gave an assurance that the Government was working on the matter and asked the lecturers to return to work as soon as possible.

The CS was flanked by Prof. Micheni Ntiba, Principal Secretary State Department for University Education and Research, Prof. Japhet Magambo, Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dulacha Galgalo , Chairman of the University Council and Prof. Chacha Nyaigoti Chacha Chairman Commission for University Education.
