Nairobi,KENYA: The Kenyatta National Hospital has denied claims that a patient caught up in the brain surgery mix-up saga that saw doctors open the skull of a wrong patient has passed on.
On Sunday, the late Angelo Miano’s family in Kitale claimed that the third year University of Nairobi Bachelor of Commerce student had missed the surgery meant to remove a clot in his head and he later died.
In a statement issued, the hospital said that the deceased patient Angelo Miano had been admitted to the hospital in critical condition on February 19th before he was transferred to the critical condition unit before he died on 27th February.
“The late Angelos Miano, whose story appeared in one of the daily Newspaper and social media referring him as one of the patients involved in the unintended surgery, was not factual.
The late Miano was admitted in critical condition on 19th February 2018 in the specialized neurosurgery ward and later transferred to Critical Care Unit (ICU) on 21st February 2018. It is unfortunate that he passed on 27th Feb. 2018.”
We wish to state that both patients are still receiving treatment in the ward and have made a remarkable improvement. The two patients were admitted to general surgery ward on 18th and 19th February 2018 respectively with a head injury but in stable condition.” The hospital corporate communications affairs director Simon Ithae said on Monday.
Angelo is reported to have sustained the injuries after being knocked by motorcycle two weeks ago along Uhuru Highway.
Angelo’s father James Muthee said that by the time he arrived at the Kenyatta national hospital from Kitale, the medics at the hospital had already conducted a CT scan on him and a decision to operate him was made when his situation deteriorated.
However, Angelo who passed on on Tuesday was allegedly not operated with doctors explaining to the family that his brain was already badly damaged and operating him would further damage his brain.
The late Angelo’s family believes that the reason why he was not operated is that the wrong patient had been operated out of negligence.
However, the hospital has denied allegations that the deceased was caught up in the mix-up echoing Health CS Sicily Kariuki’s remarks that the two patients caught up in the mix were doing well.
The body of the deceased is currently lying at the Cheregany nursing home in Trans-Nzoia County.
