Mumbai,INDIA: Two Kenyans who include a Kenya Airways employee were on Sunday night nabbed when trying to smuggle 23 kg gold biscuits worth sh. 100M, Indian media has reported.
The two Kenyans have been identified as Kenya Airways staffer Abdalla Ali Said 29 and another accomplice Ibrahim Ali who was supposed to collect the gold.
According to the reports, Abdalla had checked into the Indian city of Mumbai on Sunday from Nairobi on flight KQ210 and checked into the Grand Hyatt hotel but hotel employees got suspicious after they spotted Ibrahim walking close to Abdalla after he had checked into the hotel.
Abdalla is alleged to have hidden the 156 biscuits in his kneecaps and waist belt.
“The gold has been seized under a reasonable belief that it was smuggled to India without payment of customs duty an in contravention of provisions of the Customs Act. Both persons in the matter have been arrested and further investigations are on,” The Indian Air intelligence unit told Mumbai Mirror.
Indian police also said they had established that Abdalla’s accomplice said that he had arrived in India on 4th of January using a tourist Visa on grounds that he was a cloth trader.
This is the second time in less than two years that a KQ employee is being nabbed trying to smuggle gold in India.
In July 2016, 25-year-old Teddy Mutuma a KQ employee was nabbed with gold worth sh 37M in Mumbai.
In November last year, three KQ employees were nabbed with 40 kg of heroin at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
Kenya Airways is yet to issue a statement in regards to the matter.
