Mombasa, KENYA: Mombasa County governor Ali Hassan Joho has directed the Coast General hospital management to waive unpaid bills for patients who had fully recovered and were ready to be discharged.

Speaking at the hospital on Tuesday during the Boxing Day where he spent time with patients and staff, Joho said this was in line with the County government’s commitment to prioritize the health of the people.

About 50 patients who had already recovered at the hospital but unable to pay their bills, walked home on Tuesday evening to join their families ahead of the New Year celebrations.

Over 2 million worth of medical bills were waived off at Coast General hospital following governor Joho’s directive.

On the other hand, the Kenya National Union of Nurses Mombasa branch has called off the strike scheduled to commence this week.

Speaking to Baraka FM, on phone on Wednesday KNUN Mombasa branch secretary general Peter Maroko said the union officials have called off the strike after County government started to pay nurses their salaries and allowances.

Nurses in Mombasa had threatened to go on strike demanding county government to pay their five-month salaries and allowances.

Normal routine is currently ongoing in the public hospitals in Mombasa after the nurses canceled the planned strike.
