Nairobi, KENYA: The newly elected National Assembly Agriculture committee chair, who is also Moiben Member of Parliament Silas Tiren has vowed to deal with cartels who are disfranchising the growth of agriculture sector in the country.
Speaking to Baraka FM on Thursday, Tiren said that the committee in the course of its oversight role in the house will deal with cartels who are curtailing the sector.
“Kenya has a lot of cartels which have been putting agriculture down, we are going to deal with areas of tea, areas of coffee where you find Kenya produces the best tea, the best coffee in the world and are not recognized anywhere,” Tiren said.
He said that he will do reports on Agriculture sector which will assist the country in achieving its agricultural goals as well as work with the government in a bid to improve the sector which is undergoing enormous challenges.
Tiren indicated that his committee will put on toes sectors of coffee, sugar and maize in bid to improve the value of Kenyan products, for it to be competitive in the global market.
He said that they will be considering the small and medium enterprises in the sector to woo the youths into agriculture after reports indicating that they have lost interest in the agricultural sector.
In the last parliament, the committee which was being chaired by the former Member of Parliament of Mandera Adan Noor Mohammed had a difficult task in undertaking its oversight role when the country was going through an acute shortage of maize which prompted the government to import approximately 150,000 tonnes of maize into the country.
