Nairobi, KENYA: Ugunja Member of Parliament Opiyo Wandayi has been elected to Parliamentary Accounts Committee docket as a Chair after garnering 15 votes against Nambale MP Sakwa Bunyasi who only managed 3 votes.

Wandayi emerged the winner during a voting exercise which involved the members of the committee at parliamentary buildings on Monday morning.

At the same time, Kibwezi East legislator Jessica Mbalu edged out Busia County women representative Florence Mutua by 11 votes to Deputise Wandayi in PAC.

Others who were contesting for the post include Tongaren member of parliament Eseli Simiyu who garnered two votes.

Speaking after being declared the winner, Wandayi said that he will uphold professionalism in executing his mandate as a PAC chair.

He also said that ] PAC will be a bipartisan committee which will put the interest of public first in a bid to deliver its mandate to Kenyans with due diligence.

“We shall be guided by all time by what is in the interest of the public, We shall execute our mandate with utmost diligence and objectivity, there will be no room for witch-hunt.We shall conduct our business of course without fear or favor.”Wandayi said

The watchdog committee is among the two reserved committees for opposition to oversight government on the expenditure of public coffers.

Wandayi takes over from former Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo who left the National Assembly to vie for Siaya Gubernatorial seat where he lost to incumbent Cornel Rasanga.

Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo bid to succeed predecessor Nicholas Gumbo in the PAC Committee flopped badly as he came a distant third after he failed to get a single vote.
