Kilifi, KENYA: There was a low turnout at the Karisa Maitha sports ground where the 54th Jamuhuri day celebrations took place.
Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi snubbed the occasion without any apologies or a representative sent to grace the occasion.
It was rumored earlier that Kingi was out of the country to China on official duties but sources close to him revealed he returned to Kilifi and was around but missed out on the national occasion for reasons best known to him.
For the second time in a row, Kingi has snubbed national holidays starting with the Mashujaa day.
This raised eyebrows to many speculating that it might have been caused by the political uncertainty in the National Super Alliance camp.
Some leaders in attendance criticized the move by the county chief saying politics is over and the function is meant to celebrate the efforts of the freedom fighters who fought tirelessly for the independence of the country he and other leaders who snubbed it are now boasting to be leaders in.
Joseph Chilumo, Orange Democratic Movement chairman, Kilifi North slummed Kingi over the move saying its time he realizes that politics is over and turn to the development and seal the political differences with the national government.
“I am shocked that some dignitaries are not in attendance to this important day in the Republic of Kenya,” Chilumo said.
“We must accept that politics is over and we cannot play politics from January to December, we must now come together and focus on bringing Kenyans together and move on with development,” he added.
His absence is believed to have contributed a lot to the low turnout of the public to the occasion.
It is estimated that less than three hundred people turn up for the occasion which was graced by Kilifi County commissioner Magu Mutundika and other top security officers.
