Nairobi, KENYA: Nairobi Jubilee legislators have applauded Acting Interior CSr Fred Matiang’i on his directive to ban demonstrations in key cities in the country including Nairobi vowing to push for relocation of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission from the city center.
In a media briefing at parliamentary buildings in Nairobi led by Kamukunji member of parliament Yusuf Hassan on Thursday, they said that Matiangi’s directive is timely following the fact that Wednesday’s demonstrations in Nairobi led to the destruction of properties within the city.
Starehe Member of parliament Charles Kanyi vowed to push for the relocation of the IEBC offices from the city center, arguing that IEBC offices have resulted to destruction of properties and negating emergence of businesses within the city.
He said that he has notified the chair of IEBC Wafula Chebukati and inspector of police Joseph Boinet on his aspiration .
“I have witten a letter to IEBC ,copied to inspector generalnof police,requesting relocation of IEBC pffices frim.Starehe constituency.”Kanyi said
They slammed governors and other legislators from other counties whom they accuse of coming to Nairobi to stage demonstrations which destabilise the smooth running of businesses in the capital.
Roysambu Member of parliament Ndirangu said that soon they will move to court in bid to take legal action against those who masterminded the demonstrations indicating that they should pay for damages of losses occasioned from the NASA demos.
On the other hand, NASA legislators have vowed to go against Matiangi’s directive and attend to their demonstrations across the country as scheduled .
Led by Nyando legislator Fred Okello they said that it is their constitutional right to picket and the CS has no any mandate to halt such demonstrations.
“We all know that demos are very constitutional ,protected by article 37 of the constitution and only a court of law can tingle with the tenates of chapter 4 of the constitution and the bill of rights.” Okello said.
“Not even a single Kenyan, not even a singe state agency ,as what it takes to vacate the very fundamental rights espoused in that article.”He added.
They accused Matiangi of applying dictatorial tendencies which go against the consititution.
They vowed to stage the demonstartions across the country as from Friday and escalate them daily as from next week to pressurise the exit of IEBC officials Including the CEO Ezra Chiloba and execution of other electoral reforms .
“So what he has done today is to negate the constitution and is utterly unnacceptable.”Okelo said.
