Mombasa,KENYA:Lawyers in Mombasa have kicked off the purple ribbon week in remembrance of their colleague Willy Kimani, his client Josephat Mwenda and their Taxi driver Joseph Muiruri, who are alleged to have been murdered by police officers attached to the Syokimau police post in Machakos County in June 2016.
The advocates drawn from the Mombasa law society a sub-branch of the the Law society of Kenya, on Monday converged at the Mombasa law courts at 9.00 am and they all picked up their purple ribbons which they are expected to don for the rest of the week.
According to secretary of the Mombasa law society Natasha Ali Errey, the lawyers have lined up several activities to stand in solidarity with their late colleagues .
“We have also requested magistrates to observe a moment of silence before court proceedings begin to stand in solidarity with the late Willy Kimani,” Errery said.
The main event is expected to be held on Wednesday where the advocates are expected to march around several streets in Mombasa and later plant trees at the court .
The late Kimani and his client Josephat Mwenda and Taxi driver Joseph Muiruri, are alleged to have been murdered by police officers in June 2016 after they were abducted while leaving the Mavoko law courts and locked up at the Syokimau AP camp.
Their death caused public outrage with protesters burning the container in the police camp where the 3 had allegedly been held before being murdered and advocates all over the country boycotting the court proceedings for a week.
In an invite sent to newsrooms, the Mombasa law society wrote “This month we remember Willie, Joseph and Josephat as we continue condemning extrajudicial killings.”
