Nairobi,KENYA:The Miraa sector in the country is set for a relief after the government pumped sh 1.2b into the sector.

According to a directive by President Uhuru Kenyatta, the sh 1.2 b is set to help the sector implement the recommendations presented to him by a 14 member team he had appointed to look into the grievances and facing the sector.

“The money that was allocated will now be released and it will be used in accordance with the recommendations of the task force,” said Uhuru.

Among the key recommendations was the setting up of saccos for Miraa farmers  to provide seed  capital on credit to the farmers.

Miraa traders have been facing a decline in business after the herb was banned in the United Kingdom 2 years ago on claims that the herb is a drug.

However the government says it will set up a Miraa research institute at the Kenya Medical research institute that will develop a scientif study aimed at lobbying for the removal of a ban on the crop in parts of Europe.
