Mombasa,KENYA:Survivors of the 1994 Mtongwe ferry disaster are demanding compensation from the national government as the services are set to resume.
The survivors who were speaking during the relaunch of the services say they are yet to be compensated.
Abdalla Maalim is one of the survivors who says that despite losing his eyesight as a result of the tragedy and later his job he is yet to receive any penny from the government.
“I used to work as a seaman and after the tragedy I lost my sight ,I feel sad whenever people assume we have been compensated because we are yet to.” Abdalla said.
However, statehouse spokesperson Manoah Esipisu told reporters on Sunday that the government had compensated a few of them and the rest would be compensated before the end of March.
The Mtongwe Ferry services which was relaunched today is expected to ease congestion at the Likoni-Ferry crossing chanel.
President Uhuru Kenyatta who relaunched the Ferry services on Monday, said the government had spent over sh. 2.2 billion to purchase two ferries which would arrive in the country by July.
