Tokyo, JAPAN: Kenyan Wilson Kipsang set a new record in Tokyo Marathon on Sunday leading compatriots to claim the first six positions in the race held in Japan.
The former Berlin and London Marathon champion clocked 2:3:58 to erase the previous record and set the fastest ever time by any athlete to have completed the race.
Gideon Kipketer came second in 2:05:51 ahead of former winner Dickson Chumba, who managed 2:06:25 as the Kenyans coast to sweep the podium.
Kipsang’s timing of 2:3:58 however means he failed in his bid to eclipse compatriot Dennis Kimetto’s world record of 2:02.57 he set in 2014.
Meanwhile, it was a Kenyan affair as Sarah Chepchirchir won the women’s race in a personal best 2:19:47 beating former champion, Ethiopian, Birhane Dibaba who finished second.
Chepchirchir now adds the triumph to her Lisbon Marathon title having also made headlines in 2013 after she won the Ndakaini Half Marathon.
