Lamu, KENYA: Residents in drought stricken areas in Lamu County want the government to declare the ongoing drought a national disaster.
Areas that have been worst hit with the drought in Lamu include Pandanguo, Dide Waride, Chalaluma, Moa, Hongwe, Zebra, Pangani,Lumshi, Madina na Bar’goni villages.
The situation is threatening the lives of the affected persons and their livestock with villagers from Dide Waride ,Pandanguo and Chalaluma already losing hundreds of livestock to the drought.
They are however hopeful that if the drought is declared a national disaster,they might get the urgently needed help.
Many of the villagers reported having to go for as far as a full week without food, with pupils also skipping school due to hunger.
Many residents of the affected villages are said to have turned to herbs and roots which they now boil and use as food.
They are also appealing for aid from the government and well wishers.
According to the National Disaster Management Authority-NDMA in Lamu,over 30,000 people and at least 300,000 heads of livestock are at the brink of starvation.
