Kaya Tiwi feted in SOYA awards gala after year of triumph

Nairobi, KENYA: National basketball champions Kaya Tiwi from Kwale County are the 2016 Girls’ School Team of the Year award winners.

Tiwi was feted in the Sports personality of the Year SOYA awards gala held at the Kenya International Conference Centre KICC on Thursday night.

This comes after they triumphed in 2016 where they won the national title and then went ahead to claim their maiden East Africa Secondary Schools girls’ basketball trophy during their debut.

Meanwhile, St. Johns Kaloleni’s form four graduate Mwanahalima Adam was named the Most Promising Girl in 2016.

A part from helping national women’s soccer team Harambee Starlets to qualify for the Africa Women Cup of Nations, she also guided St. Johns to claim their first ever national Girls’ soccer title.

Elsewhere, Harambee Starlets emerged women’s team of the Year while Rugby Sevens team Shujaa were crowned men’s team of the Year following their success in 2016, where they won their maiden main cup title in the World Rugby 7s Series.

Olympic 5,000m champion Vivian Cheruiyot won the overall 2016 Sports Personality of the Year Awards SOYA, edging fellow Olympian Eliud Kipchoge who claimed men’s marathon at the Rio summer Olympics.

This was the 13th edition of the annual SOYA awards inaugurated by former Kenyan long distance runner Paul Tergat.
