Mombasa, KENYA: A 31-year-old woman was on Monday arraigned in a Mombasa court for allegedly being in possession of explosives.
Feruz Hamid Abubakar is alleged to have been in possession of four electronic detonators, two explosive boosters, a laptop and eight mobile phones suspected to be used in terrorist activities.
The suspect who is a mother of one, was arrested on 7th January 2017 at her premises in Bondeni area within Mombasa County, following intelligence information.
Prosecution counsel Mr. Eugine Wangila made an application in court seeking detention of the suspect for 14 days at the port police station, so as to enable completion of investigations.
Mr. Wangila informed the court that the items recovered from the suspect upon her arrest were under investigation at the forensic unit.
He further linked the suspect to a terrorist group and said he believed she had information which will help arrest other suspects.
“We are also investigating her close friends and some of her family members,” said Wangila.
The defense counsel Mr. Chacha Mwita opposed detention of her client saying prosecution had not given enough reason for her to continue being in detention.
Chacha told the court that the prosecution was only relying on speculation.
Chacha claimed that inventory showing items the suspect allegedly possessed, was not produced as evidence in court.
The court is set to rule on the detention of the suspect on Teusday.
