President Museveni applauds history makers Uganda Cranes

Kampala, UGANDA: Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has congratulated Uganda Cranes after it was picked as the African national team of the Year for 2016.

In the Confederation of Africa Football CAF awards gala held at the International Conference Center in Abuja on Thursday night, Uganda fed off competitions from DR Congo and Senegal to claim the fete.

The achievement did not only enthrall Ugandan supporters, but also President Museveni who took to his Facebook page to applaud his boys for a job well done.

Under the tutelage of the Serbian Milutin Sredojević, Uganda posted a glittering performance in 2016 that saw them qualify for the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations after 38 years of waiting.

To sum up the night, Ugandan goalkeeper Dennis Onyango who won African club championship with South African club Mamelodi Sundown last season, also took home the African footballer of the year accolade for players based in Africa.

Leicester City and Algerian winger Riyad Mahrez beaten Gabon and Borussia Dortmund Dortmund strike Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Liverpool and Senegal forward Sadio Mane for African best foreign based player award.
