Kenya Ports Authority has acquired the first locally manufactured mooring boat, KMB 9, which will boost marine operations and elevate the overall efficiency of the Port of Mombasa.
The newly constructed 14.5m long mooring boat is equipped with a twin screw designed boat, powered by two Caterpillar engines CAT C9.3 ACERT series, with a power rating of 310 kW at 2100rpm, capable of reaching a maximum speed of 10.5 knots.
“This achievement is a significant step forward as we embrace and nurture our local capabilities in shipbuilding. Furthermore, the construction of this marine craft locally aligns with ‘Buy Kenya, Build Kenya’ government policy, towards the promotion of local manufacturing,” said KPA Managing Director Captain William Ruto while receiving the boat at the port.
The high-performance modern boat can also withstand rough weather at sea while conducting marine operations.
The Authority has adequately invested in marine operations, boasting a contingent of six Tugboats, four pilot boats, four mooring boats, and two security patrol boats.
“I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the teams of Kenya Ports Authority, Kenya Shipyard Limited, and SECO for your teamwork and collaboration, which has made it possible for us to welcome our very first locally manufactured pilot boat,” said Capt. Ruto.
KMB-9 was built at USD 2.040 million (sh.263,874,000) with a delivery period of nine months.
