Performance in Science subjects among learners in Kilifi County is expected to improve following the launch of a science program by Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) Wellcome Trust.

In partnership with the Kilifi County Library Department, the Research Programme’s ‘School Engagement Program’ aims to harness and guide learners by providing study materials.

Speaking during a Science Literacy Open Day in Kilifi, Angela Mumo, the School Engagement Program Officer, said the program aimed to motivate learners to take science subjects as one way to develop future scientists in the county.

“The program targets up to 100 students from various schools. We will provide them with materials to enhance their science learning. Science studies are crucial to spreading awareness about the importance of scientific research within schools and the broader community,” Mumo explained.

She encouraged students to work diligently, highlighting that anyone has the potential to become an influential scientist.

“As demonstrated in the book ‘12 Remarkable African Life Scientists’, anyone can achieve greatness in science and significantly impact society,” she added.

Kilifi County Gender and Youth Executive Committee Member (CECM), Ruth Dama, echoed Mumo’s sentiments, stressing the importance of introducing science to children early in life.

“Passion for science is developed at a young age, and nurturing that passion equips children with the skills and mindset to explore complex scientific concepts,” Dama noted.

Michael Maua, a representative from Pwani University, called on parents to actively involve their children in science-related activities, noting that science encompasses diverse disciplines.

“Every child has a talent in a particular branch of science. Parents should identify and support this,” Maua advised.

Charles Dea, a parent said, “It is a responsibility of every parent to involve their son/ daughter in matters related to sciences.”

According to learners, the project which has been running for two weeks now, has changed their attitudes towards science studies.

KEMRI Wellcome Trust is partnering with several organizations including Kesho Kenya Organisation, SHOFCO Urban network, Moving the Goal Post, and Kibarani Primary School to facilitate the project.
